Background information:

John^6 (Unis) Van Wicklen
(Jan/John^5, Paul^4, Garret^3, Gerrit^2, Jentie^1 Jeppes) was bap. 1788 at Gilead Evangelical Lutheran Church in Brunswick, Renssalaer, Dutchess County, NY (familysearch.com provides this listing under the name of John Van Wicklaer). John m. Margaret Carr before 1822 in Ontario, Canada. Margaret was b. 1803 in Ontario, Canada. (The 1871 Census of Ontario lists a Margaret Van Wicklin (age 70), widow, living in the household of Gates Van Wicklin in Brighton, Ontario. There are also three "Carrs", a father and two sons in the Gates household as well. This Margaret is the widow of John (Unis) Van Wicklin.)

The names John (born in USA) and Margaret (born in Canada) appear on a death certificate for Perry^7 Van Wicklin (this certificate is in the possession of Fred Van Wicklin, a direct descendent.) A "Unis" and Margaret with children Miles, Rebecca, Holmes, John, and Perry appear on an 1861 Census for Malahide County, Ontario, Canada. This leads to the assumption that John and "Unis" are the same person. (Perhaps "Unis" is a corruption of "Johannes.")

Children: Miles^7 Van Wicklin, b. 16 May 1822, Brighton, Northumberland Co, Ontario and d. 28 March 1876 in Lansing, Michigan (age at death was 53 years, 10 months, 12 days); cause of death was an abscess. Miles was a wagon maker. Miles was in Seymour Township at time of 1871 census. Miles married 7 June 1863 to Elizabeth Murdaugh, 23, of Dorchester, b. in Malahide, the daughter of John and Hannah Murdaugh; Gates^7 Van Wicklin, b. 24 January 1823, Brighton, Northumberland Co., Ontario, CA. He had two sons, Sherman (b. 1866) and Edward (b. 1868) by a liaison with Mary Ann Davis whom he never married. Rebecca^7 Van Wicklin, b. abt. 1831, Elgin County, Ontario and d. 24 October 1894 in Brighton, Ontario, CAN Rebecca is listed in the 1881 census as living in the household of her brother Gates VW in Brighton, Ont., CAN; Holmes^7 Van Wicklin, b. abt. 1835, Elgin County, Ontario; Almira^7 Van Wicklin, b. abt 1837, Britain, Malahide Twp., Elgin, Ont, CAN. She married E. Smades (b. 1829) on 28 Nov 1858 in Elgin County, Ont., CAN. E. Smades is s/o of Benjamin and Elizabeth Smades. E. and Almira [Van Wicklin] Smades resided in Malahide Twp, Ont, CAN; John^7 Van Wicklin, b. abt 1842, Elgin County, Ontario; Perry^7 Van Wicklin, b. 8 February 1844, Elgin County, Ontario

Discrepancies in birth years for Miles and Gates above. According to the birth dates listed, Gates is b. less than 8 months after Miles. Perhaps Gates was actually b. in 1824. Also, Miles marriage registration lists him as 36 in 1863 when he married which would give him a birth year of 1827. However, in that his young bride is listed as 23, perhaps Miles considered "36" a more appropriate age than "41"

At present there are two possibilities as to the parentage of John^6 (Unis) Van Wicklin, but the first of these two possibilities seems the strongest at this point.

1. John^6 (Unis) Van Wicklin is the son of John^5 (Paul^4, Garret^3, Gerrit^2, Jentie^1 Jeppes). Census data lists John^5 with a son and two daughters (unnamed) b. between Maria (b. 23 Jan 1785) and Adam (b. 17 September 1791). John^5's children are born in New York. However, John's father, Paul^4, acquired land in Canada after 1797 and several of John^5's sons were serving in the Northumberland Country, Ontario, Canada Militia in 1826 (Cornelius, Dirck, Adam, Jacob). Adam was m. in Ernestown, CAN in 1811. Familysearch.com lists a bap. year of 1788 for John Van Wicklaer at Gilead Evang. Lutheran Church in Dutchess County, NY. The two unnamed daughters are most likely Elizabeth and Rebecca (see page for John^5 and Christina (Traver) Van Wicklin.

2. John^6 (Unis) could be a son of Garret^5 (Paul^4, Garret^3, Gerrit^2, Jentie^1 Jeppes). Paul's son Garret^5 was b. in Jamaica, NY and moved to Dutchess County, m. Rachel Frost, and this is where his children were born in the 1780s and 1790s. In 1801, Garret leased Lot 12 Concession 8 in Cramahe Township, Ontario, Canada which is a region where many Carrs are located. In fact, Garret's property is currently owned by Carr family. Garret reportedly had several sons and daughters and the names and birth years of most of them have not been verified. Presumably, Abram and Cornelius are two of Garret's sons, and John (Unis) MIGHT be another.

Mike Stephenson's Ontario Genealogical Database locates the following "heads of families" in Murray and Cramahe Townships (http://www.ontariogenealogy.com/index.html)

1828 -- John Van Wicklen (Murray Twp)

1841 -- Cramahe Twp (Abraham Van Wicklin, Cornelius Van Wicklin, David Van Wicklin, Garrett Van Wicklin, Jacob Van Wicklin, John Van Wicklin, and John C. Van Wicklin

I believe this Garret to be the father of Cornelius and Abraham, and Abraham is the father of David VW. John Van Wicklin is the father of Jacob Van Wicklin and perhaps the other John Van Wicklin. We note in the birthplaces and dates for John^6's children above that Miles and Gates were b. in Northumberland County and the rest of the children listed were b. in Elgin County. So... apparently John^6 removed to Elgin after 1828 and might be the John VW in the 1828 listed above but could not be either John VW listed in Cramahe in 1841. Eventually David and Jacob VW will migrate to Elgin County as well but they are obviously still in Cramahe in 1841.
